Are We Smarter Asleep Than Awake?
Good morning.
Ever wake up from a dream that made no sense, yet somehow felt like it knew something you didn’t?
We tend to treat dreams as strange detours: symbolic, emotional, or just plain nonsense. But what if they’re doing something more advanced than our waking minds can follow? This edition explores the idea that dreams may be running complex mental simulations, solving problems, and processing reality on a different cognitive frequency.
The Algorithm of Dreams
We’re used to thinking of dreams as emotional theater. Symbolic. Mysterious. Maybe even a bit absurd. They rearrange faces, timelines, and settings with no respect for logic, and we treat them like poetic noise, waiting to be interpreted.
But what if dreams aren’t disordered at all?
What if they’re not nonsense, but a form of cognition we just don’t know how to read?
You fall asleep and dream of an orange hallway that leads to your childhood dentist’s office, except it’s underwater, and your old boss is offering you a bike made of salt.
Nonsense? Maybe. But consider this: your brain, during REM sleep, activates some of its most pattern-sensitive, emotionally complex, memory-integrated systems. Not for rest, but for processing.
Dreams may be operating like nonlinear algorithms. They could be detecting anomalies, testing simulations, solving problems you don’t consciously know exist. Not with language. Not with conscious logic. But through image, compression, absurdity, and metaphor. Like an experimental operating system with its own syntax.
In waking life, we’re bound by sequence. In dream logic, sequence gives way to association. Time bends. Objects morph. But the work continues.
Some researchers now suggest that dreaming may be more cognitively demanding than waking thought. It could be a kind of parallel processing environment for unresolved tension, hidden patterns, or unspoken fears.
You may not be able to remember the equation.
But that doesn’t mean your brain didn’t run it.
So maybe dreams aren’t the opposite of rational thought. Maybe they’re just happening on a different frequency, one we haven’t learned to decode yet.
After all, just because something feels surreal doesn’t mean it lacks intelligence. It might be more advanced than what we call “consciousness,” just running in a different dialect.
Is there a dream you still think about, even if it never made sense?

Not Exactly Random. Just Sideways, And On Time
We tend to call things “random” when they don’t match our plans. But maybe randomness is just order with a better sense of humor. Not everything unfolds on cue. Some things arrive sideways, unannounced, and exactly on time.
We’re always curious. What’s something that felt random, but turned out just right?
