Make Them Feel Understood
Good Morning.
Most people don’t need encouragement as much as they need recognition. They aren’t looking to be cheered up or talked through. They need to hear that what they’re experiencing makes sense.
Often, the best thing you can say to someone isn’t advice or reassurance. It’s a line that makes them feel understood. The kind that makes them think, “Okay, you get it.”
It might sound like recognizing the effort they don’t talk about. Or acknowledging a tension they’re living with without dramatizing it. Or simply putting words to a feeling they haven’t quite organized yet. These moments don’t feel scripted or emotional. They feel real.
What sets these responses apart is that they don’t ask anything in return. They don’t require a reply. They don’t pull the person into explanation or action. They don’t turn the moment into a conversation about growth or next steps.
That restraint matters. So much of daily life already demands performance: clarity, optimism, progress. When someone hears a line that understands them without asking for more, it creates a small but real sense of relief. The feeling of being met rather than managed.
This is especially true during the holidays, when people are dealing with family dynamics, expectations, and unspoken histories. A well-placed remark can cut through all of that. Not by fixing anything, but by offering a moment of understanding that feels sincere.
We tend to underestimate how much impact this kind of language has. We assume meaningful support has to be active or substantial. But often, the most generous thing you can offer is a single line that lets someone feel seen and then gives them a moment to take it in.
Understanding, when it’s offered without conditions, doesn’t just comfort people. It brings things into focus. And sometimes, that’s exactly enough.
