The Gap Between What You Said and What They Heard
Good Morning.
Most people think that if they explain themselves well enough, understanding should follow.
They choose their words carefully. They add context. They clarify intent. They say, “What I mean is…” and try again.
And still, something doesn’t connect.
Explaining is about accuracy.
Being understood is about reception.
You can explain something perfectly and still miss the mark. Not because you failed, but because understanding depends on more than words. It depends on timing, emotional state, shared context, and what the other person brings into the conversation.
You see it everywhere.
In relationships, you can be careful with your words and still feel like the other person isn’t hearing you. At work, you can try to be specific and still be heard as critical. In families, the same explanations repeat because the dynamic never changes.
The mistake is assuming explanation leads to connection.
It doesn’t.
Understanding requires common ground and a willingness to keep listening even if the message is uncomfortable.
Sometimes people aren’t confused. They’re guarded.
Sometimes they hear you but resist what it means.
Sometimes they understand and still can’t let it in.
It can be tough to accept, because it means effort doesn’t always produce outcome.
It also explains why some conversations feel easy and others feel impossible, even when you’re being just as careful in both. The difference isn’t always how well you’re explaining. It’s whether the other person is open to understanding.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t aim to be clear. It just isn’t the finish line.
A better move is to stop asking, “How can I explain this better?” and ask, “What would make this easier to hear?”
Sometimes it’s saying less.
Sometimes it’s choosing a better time to talk.
Sometimes it’s accepting that you might not get understanding from this person right now.
Connection isn’t built by perfect explanations.
It’s built when two people meet with enough openness for meaning to pass between them.
And that’s a different skill entirely.
