The Relationship You Don’t Talk About

Good Morning, welcome to Thursday.

The funny thing about perception is that we trust it more than we probably should. We assume we see the world clearly, that our take on things is objective, that our interpretation of what someone meant is exactly what they meant.

Except… that’s not always how it works.

We tend to read between the lines. We fill in gaps. Sometimes, we project our own stories onto situations that may not even call for them. And nowhere do these little distortions feel more personal than in relationships.

Today’s perspective shift isn’t about how others see you. It’s about how you see yourself and how that shapes everything else.

The Relationship You Don’t Talk About

We spend so much time thinking about our relationships with others, our friends, our family, our partners. But what about the relationship we have with ourselves?

It’s easy to overlook, but self-perception silently influences every other connection we have. If we struggle with self-worth, we might seek validation in ways we don’t realize. If we’re overly self-critical, we might assume others see us the same way. If we don’t trust ourselves, it might make it harder to trust others.

The way we talk to ourselves, the way we treat ourselves, and the way we see ourselves all shape how we show up in every relationship we have.

So if we’re looking to strengthen our connections, maybe the first place to look isn’t outward but inward.

How Self-Perception Shapes Our Relationships

Most of the time, we assume relationships are built on communication, shared experiences, and mutual effort. While that’s true, what we often miss is the underlying filter. It’s the way we interpret words, actions, and emotions through the lens of how we see ourselves.

If we don’t feel valued, we might downplay compliments or assume people don’t mean them.
If we’re hard on ourselves, we might take criticism more personally than it was intended.
If we fear rejection, we might hold back in relationships or distance ourselves before anyone else can.

None of this happens consciously. It’s not that we want to misread situations, but our brains are wired to look for patterns, and sometimes, the strongest patterns come from our own insecurities.

Noticing the Patterns

A good way to recognize this is to pay attention to our inner dialogue.

When someone praises you, do you accept it, or do you brush it off?
When someone doesn’t text back right away, do you assume the worst, or do you give them the benefit of the doubt?
When you make a mistake, do you treat yourself with patience, or do you criticize yourself in a way you’d never speak to a friend?

We often assume that how others treat us defines our relationships. But just as much, it’s about how we let ourselves be treated.

The Shift That Changes Everything

So what happens when we shift our self-relationship?

We stop looking for proof that we’re not enough and start recognizing where we already are.
We stop assuming that distance means disinterest and give people space to show up for us.
We stop defining our worth by what we can do for others and start valuing who we are outside of expectations.

The relationships we have with others are a reflection of the relationship we have with ourselves. Strengthening one strengthens the other.

So the next time you think about improving a relationship, consider this. Maybe the real work doesn’t start with someone else. Maybe it starts with you.
