What the Algorithm Thinks You Want

Good morning. It’s Tuesday. Before the feed fills up, take a second to notice what you’re being shown. Not everything that feels familiar is something you actually chose.
Today we’re looking at how personalization shapes what we see, and how easy it is to move through a day that doesn’t feel entirely chosen.
What the Algorithm Thinks You Want
There are days when you don’t really decide what kind of day you’re having.
You just wake up, open a screen, and the suggestions take over.
You scroll, you swipe, you watch something short, something calming, something chaotic. You click on a pair of shoes you didn’t know you needed. A recipe you’ll never make. A workout that seems like the right idea for a version of you that hasn’t existed since 2020.
This isn’t always bad.
Sometimes the algorithm gets it right.
It reads your searches, your likes, your late-night curiosity. It gives you what it thinks you want. More of what you’ve already touched.
But over time, more of the same starts to become something else.
Less discovery. More reinforcement.
And the question becomes: At what point are you not choosing anymore?
Modern life is increasingly built on the logic of personalization. Everything you see is tailored to you. But the "you" it's tailoring to is a version of your past behavior. Not necessarily your current desire. Certainly not your deeper needs.
The algorithm is not malicious. It’s just trained on repetition.
And repetition is not the same as intention.
So when you get caught in the loop, buying the thing, watching the thing, reacting to the thing, it’s worth pausing and asking:
Is this still me choosing? Or is this me moving through someone else’s map of what I might want?
What the algorithm offers is what’s easiest to engage with.
What you actually want might take more effort, focus, or intention
It might be less clickable. Less consistent. Less obvious.
But it will probably feel more like you.
And maybe that’s the difference. Not escaping the feed completely but knowing when to step outside of it.
To cook something you weren’t served.
To wear something the algorithm hasn’t seen.
To read something that hasn’t learned your preferences yet.
Not to rebel. Just to remember.
There’s a version of you that doesn’t need to be predicted to exist.
