Why We Treat Our Future Selves Like Strangers
Worthyest

Good morning. It’s Monday, and every small step you take today is a vote for the version of yourself you haven’t met yet.
We don’t always notice when we’re handing off responsibilities to the future. But putting things off doesn’t erase them. It just shifts the weight forward. Today’s thought explores what happens when we stop treating our future selves like strangers.
Later Always Sounds Like a Better Idea
Behavioral economists have a name for it: temporal discounting. It’s the tendency to undervalue anything that doesn’t benefit you right now. You know how the story goes. I’ll eat better tomorrow. Catch up on sleep over the weekend. Save when I have more and it’s less stressful. You tell yourself it’ll balance out. Eventually.
But the truth is, we don’t just delay what matters. We slowly create conditions our future selves will inherit. Think about that. We skip rest, overcommit, avoid hard decisions, scroll to distract ourselves, overspend, and expect the future version of us to sort it all out.
What if your future self wasn’t just the catch-all for everything you avoid today? Because pushing it off doesn’t make it disappear. It just makes it someone else’s problem. And that someone is still you.
This isn’t about guilt. It’s about consequences. Every small decision, including what you tell yourself, what you prioritize, what you postpone, builds the conditions that version of you will inherit.
So ask yourself: If someone else had to live with the outcome of your choices, would you be making the same ones? Because someone does. It’s you. Just later.

Today’s Insight: What Thought Sounds Like
We Think in Words. But Do We Actually Hear Them?
It’s not just a thought. It’s a process. When you talk to yourself, your brain doesn’t simply put the thought into words. It quietly engages the same systems it uses for speaking out loud. The movements are planned but never carried out. There’s no sound, but everything else is there. You’re not hearing a voice in your head; you’re watching your brain prepare to speak, as if the words were right on the verge of being spoken. Source: Oppenheim & Dell, 2010
